Microsoft has lost its spot as the world's third-largest mobile phone vendor to a rival from China, according to a new report by market researcher Strategy Analytics.

During the second quarter, Microsoft's share of the global mobile phone market sunk to 6.4 percent from 11.9 percent for the same quarter last year. In terms of mobile phone shipments, Microsoft's plummeted to 27.8 million from 50.3 million a year earlier, Strategy Analytics said Wednesday.

Meizu has officially announced their latest handset. It’s the Meizu MX5, and it’s got a lot of reasons to make us take notice. The biggest will be its use of MediaTek’s latest Helio X10 chipset.

Specifically, it uses the X10 Turbo, which pairs 8 Cortex-A53 cores at 2.2GHz with a PowerVR G6200 GPU. That’s a whole lot of horsepower, and it’s said that it can stand toe-to-toe with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 and Samsung’s Exynos 7420. It also has 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

An email has emerged that seems to show the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) discussing a media campaign againstGoogle with lawyers in the office of Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood. Google, which was under investigation by Hood, has been trying to discover how that investigation was run, and released the email as part of a court filing. This is one of the few such documents that Google has been able to acquire.

Finally, after months of waiting, the second Ubuntu Phone is upon us. The original – the BQ Aquaris 4.5 – was a serviceable phone but the poor specs and extremely early version of Ubuntu that accompanied it made it seem a lot more like an early development phone than something you’d use on a day-to-day basis. The low specs and shaky interface made it undesirable enough that our review for it was somewhat less than positive. Put simply, the hardware needed to be better, and the operating system itself needed much more love from the community and social media companies.
