One Piece Online with Considerably Expanded Character Roster

One Piece game by Joygame is outing, featuring a considerably expanded character roster and considerably more levels to play through. You can't shake the feeling that these games would be better if they'd just make fewer of them. It was still mostly levels made out of featureless boxes, connected by isthmuses, and filled with cannon fodder, but at least it tried something a little different. But different isn't enough. It's with good reason that One Piece Online strips out everything new, because the platforming was jumbled and unfun, and the boss battles were marred by imperfect mechanics, like the game's horribly inaccurate grab.

Part of the appeal of a long-running story like One Piece is having a chance to get to know the characters and understand their place in the growing story. While many arcs feel somewhat self-contained due to the nature of traveling from island to island, the arcs often introduce a new crewmate, develop characters, allow background machinations, and generally move the overall story. So when the aforementioned Battle of Marineford occurs, readers understand the weight of the events and why they matter. Combined with the exuberance and earnestness that creator puts into his work, it's easy to become attached to the characters and cheer them on through increasing adversity.

Gameplay too, is an almost carbon copy of that other series. For those who have never played before, players can expect to be put onto a large battlefield populated with absolutely stupid numbers of enemies. Generally, your goal will be either the capturing of particular territory or the elimination of a certain enemy officer. Often, battlefield victory and boss conditions will change throughout the battle, sometimes forcing the player to temporarily abandon one goal in the service of another (protecting another character, for example). Another similarity lies in the game encouraging players to rack up massive combo numbers as they thin out the enemy ranks in the immediate area.

In the game, that means assembling a crew of five characters from throughout the manga run in order to battle past a colorful and ever-changing cast of antagonists. Some of the game mechanics owe quite a bit to Puzzle & Dragons, including the rock-paper-scissors relationship between character types and the leveling and evolution system. Those are the parts you’ve likely run across elsewhere.

Manga game adaptations are frequent--and frequently disappointing--but One Piece Online surprised me by actually being fun to play. The combat is a blast, even if it takes place in unremarkable locations. Battle Coliseum is a great diversion, and although you can't take on your friends, you can still experience the series' latest events with a variety of unique fighters. This all comes together in a package that will delight fans of the manga--but if you play it with someone who doesn't read One Piece, prepare to hear "Who is that?" a bunch.
