ZrO2 in zircon brick is about 65% which is almost composed of zirconite crystals and contains only a very small amount of glass phase and free ZrO2. The ture density is about 4.55g/cm3 or so, and the maximum ture density can reach 4.62 g/cm3. The bulk density of zircon is between 3.6 g/cm3 and 3.8 g/cm3, and apparent pososity is above 13%.
Zircon brick has high viscosity at high temperature, so it has high refractoriness which is more than 1825℃. The cold crushing strength of zircon brick is about 100Mpa to 430Mpa, and refractoriness under load is above 1650℃ which will increase with the increase of sintered temperature and decrease of fluxible mineralizer, the maximum can get to 1750℃. So, zircon brick is a good wear resistant refractory brick which can resist heat load at high temperature.
However, zircon brick has low thermal expansion, meanwhile, zircon brick is sintered at high temperature, so that makes zircon have high stable volume. The thermal expansion coefficient is only 0.5% when temperature is from room temperature to 1400℃. Two hours re-sinter at temperature of 1500℃ makes the shrinkage only be 0.04%-0.02%. High dense zircon brick has low thermal shock when there is no coarse grain in it, so it must be heated or cooled slowly during using.
It is not easy for zircon brick to be corrosive by glass liquid and slag, so zircon brick has the property of good corrosion resistance to glass liquid. So zircon brick is mainly used in the liner and sharply corrosive place of glass furnace, and especially used in the directly contact part between glass furnace and glass liquid, and superstructure parts.
