Lionel Messi wins public vote for Ballon d'Or

FIFA Coins being a four-time winner, Lionel Messi approaches this year's Ballon d'Or awards ceremony as the rank outsider.

It's widely thought that Cristiano Ronaldo will scoop up the prestigious individual prize, with Manuel Neuer the option for those people, like Michel Platini, who believe it should go to a member of the World Cup winning Germany team.

But, according to a public vote held on the official FIFA Ballon d'Or's Facebook page, Lionel Messi is the most deserving.

The Argentine superstar has got more than 32,000 votes so far and currently leads the poll after 20 hours of voting.

In second place is Ronaldo, with just over 27,000 votes, and then third is Neuer with a measly 3,600.

This may just be a reflection of Messi's unbelievable popularity on social media, after all he has 77m on Facebook alone. But you'd also expect Ronaldo, after a year in which he scored the most goals in a Champions League single-season and ended 2014 with the most goals across the year, to clean up on Facebook. He currently has over 100m fans on the website.

Against this kind of popularity, poor Neuer doesn't stand much of a chance, even if is his candidacy is a pretty strong one.
