Botafogo relegated for just second time in 110 years

Botafogo were relegated to the Brazilian second division for only the second time in 110 years on Sunday after losing 2-0 against Santos, their 22nd defeat of a troubled season.

"Fut 15 Coins , Botafogo will play in Serie B next season. There have been a lot of problems, mistakes and defeats. The club asks fans for their forgiveness," said a statement on the club's Twitter feed.

Plagued by financial problems, Botafogo, nicknamed "Lone Star", are famed in Brazil for being the club of legendary player Garrincha.

Former Brazil striker Leandro Damiao scored twice in the second half to give Santos the win and seal Botafogo's demotion. The two-time Brazilian champion also played in the second division in 2003.

With one round left, Botafogo is second-to-last in the 20-team standings with 33 points. It is six points behind Palmeiras, the first team outside the relegation zone. The bottom four clubs are demoted.
