Working Principle of KOSUN Vertical Cutting Dryer

As indispensable equipment in drilling waste management system, vertical centrifuge has been widely used in oilfield drilling plant for the purpose of environment protection as well as cost effective consideration. In this essay, we will mainly talk about the development background of vertical centrifuge, namely cuttings dryer and its brief working principle introduction.

Vertical Cutting Dryeris a continuous screen type centrifuge with automatic feed control designed for liquid-solid separation. The VC is designed to recover the liquid phase of the drilling fluid from drilled solids by exposing the latter to very high centrifugal acceleration forces which improve fluid separation from the drill cuttings. By further clarifying the costly liquid phase which can be returned to the active mud system, the machine helps save money on the expensive drilling fluids. In addition, it is designed and manufactured to work safely. This large high-speed rotating machine requires care and understanding for maximum safety. Unsafe practice in maintenance and operation will cause conditions, which are hazardous to both personnel and property.

VERTI-G Cuttings Dryers is a screened upright centrifuge that utilizes both centrifugal force and screening to minimize oil retained on the cuttings by forces of cohesion and capillary action. The basic components of the Vortex are shown below.

As shown in the figure above, cuttings enter the Vortex at the top of the unit and fall into the inner separation area. The conical screen basket within the unit rotates, producing an increasing G-force as the cuttings are forced downward and outward of up to 360 times the natural gravitational force (G-Force). As associated mud separates from the cuttings under the induced gravitational forces within the unit, the openings in the screen (210-500μ) allows recovered fluid to pass through and exit the unit. To this step, the VERTI-G Cuttings Dryers has finished its separation task from wet drilling cuttings. Then the recovery mud will further be transferred to high speed centrifuge to be processed again.
