Home sides claim opening advantage
Both home Fifa 15 coins sides secured victories in their first leg semi-final matches in the CAF Champions League, but with the games ending 2-1 the ties remain wide open. AS Vita Club, whose last appearance in the last four of the show-piece event of African club football dates back to 1981, continued their dominance at home with a victory against CS Sfaxien, while ES Setif managed to beat TP Mazembe. The winners of the two-legged final will join Moghreb Tetouan - who qualify as the host nation's champions - as Africa's representatives at the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2014 in December.
Game of the week
ES Setif 2-1 TP Mazembe
Algerian club ES Setif had to come from behind to record their first home win in the competition since the end of March. Playing behind closed doors following crowd trouble in earlier games, the Black Eagles fell behind against TP Mazembe early in the second half when Said Aroussi beat his own goalkeeper whilst trying to clear a cross from Zambian international Rainford Kalaba. The visitors kept the advantage for just a few minutes though as Sofiane Younes found the back of the net with a diving header.
With the game seemingly heading towards a 1-1 draw, the Mazembe back line was guilty of poor defending, allowing Abdelmalek Ziaya to make the most of the opportunity. Mazembe goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba could do nothing to stop the veterans' wicked shot from the edge of the area with just a few minutes to go. The result leaves Setif the only unbeaten club in the competition, and Mazembe coach Patrice Carteron said that Setif were now favourites to qualify for the final: “They played well, but we will prepare for the second leg, hoping to win by two goals or by one goal to nil to qualify."
Other match
CS Sfaxien coach Philippe Troussier knew ahead of his side's clash in Kinshasa against Vita Club that it would be a tough game as the home side had last lost a home match in the competition in 2012. Mubele Ndombe gave local fans plenty to cheer about with his co-leading sixth goal in the competition before Luvumbu Nzinga added a second shortly after the break. Troussier urged his players to go forward in search of an away goal and they were rewarded for their attacking play with some 20 minutes to go when Tunisian international Ali Maaloul pulled one back for Sfaxien, who came through a group that included their Tunisian rivals Esperance.
Player of the week
Flamboyant and somewhat eccentric goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba has already tasted success in the Champions League with TP Mazembe, and the pony-tailed Congo DR international also helped his club to the final of the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup. Although Kidiaba, who is in his 12th season with Mazembe, could not prevent the Ravens from losing 2-1 against Setif in Algeria, the 38-year-old was in excellent form throughout the match. Kidiaba, who has also made a name for himself by working for peace in his country calling on all those fighting to turn in their weapons, denied Akram Djahnit and Sofiane Younes with breath-taking saves. The close result gives Mazembe, who topped a group that included Cairo giants Zamalek, the chance to overturn the deficit in the return leg in Lubumbashi next weekend.
The stat
9 – The number of games that Congo DR team Vita Club have been unbeaten at home in the Champions League. The last club to win in Kinshasa against the 1973 champions were Algerian club ASO Chlef, who won 3-2 in April 2012. Since then, Vita Club have played nine matches, winning seven and drawing two.
What they said
"We had a tough week, where everything seemed to gang up against us, We faced a very strong and well organized team, but we did the most important thing by winning the game. The goal we conceded was damaging but we will try in the second leg to show the same fighting spirit, with the hope of qualifying for the final" - ES Setif coach Kheireddine Madoui

Can TP Mazembe become only the third club to win the competition for the fifth time? The only other clubs who have managed that feat are the Cairo duo of Al Ahly, who have won it eight times, and five-time winners Zamalek.http://www.mmofifa.com
