Items like wristbands, shin guards, caps and towels bearing names of the teams are selling like hot cakes. We have customers even from Salalah,” said Sandeep Arora, the owner of sports shop in Muscat.

And what is a World Cup without a World Cup ticket to Brazil?

With the excitement over the World Cup building up, travel agents in the city are trying their best to promote Latin America among sports buffs.

Muscat resident Abdullah is counting his days. Come June, he will board an Emirates flight to witness the frenzy in football in Brazil. He has also bagged a ticket for the Argentina-Bosnia match scheduled in Rio de Janeiro on June 15. “Since Maradona is my favourite player, Argentina is the team I am rooting for. I am very excited about the trip. Watching my favourite team play from the stadium has always been my dream and this is all set to become true. I will also take a tour of Buenos Aires. If things go well, I might also visit my hero, Maradona’s, residence,” said the 37-year-old businessman.

In Rio de Janeiro, one can take a trip to see statue of Christ the Redeemer, enjoy a ride on a cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain and also groove to samba dance. “What we would suggest is to opt for a match during the four day stay in Rio De Janeiro. One can also club a two- day stay in another Brazilian city. During the two day stay, one day can be used for sightseeing while the other day can be used for a match,” added Antonio.

Sur resident, Fahad has selected this package. He will be watching the Argentina-Bosnia match on June 15 and then return to Rio to watch some other exciting matches. “I want to explore the place. However, getting a chance to watch a match sitting right at the stadium is an added bonus. I have chosen matches that can fit my itinerary and of course the ticket price of these matches were comparativly less,” said Fahad.

Agents said there is already a huge response for World Cup packages. Most travel agents in the country are selling tickets under six categories as prescribed by the World Cup organisers — Private Suite, Bossa Nova Studio, Match Premier, Match Business Seat, Match Pavilion and Match Club.
