A group led by Chinese scholar Chunyu Han has decided to retract their controversial paper about a new gene-editing technique, according to a retraction statement posted Wednesday on the website of the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Han, a scholar from Hebei University of Science and Technology, and his team published a paper in Nature Biotechnology last May. They reported that NgAgo could be used to locate and snip specific bits of DNA in laboratory-grown human cells, permanently disabling genes.

The paper claimed that NgAgo might be more efficient and versatile than the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technique. But their paper soon attracted controversy.

In their latest statement, the authors said despite the efforts of many laboratories, an independent replication of the results in their paper has not been reported. "We are therefore retracting our initial report at this time to maintain the integrity of the scientific record."

But the authors also said that they nevertheless continue to investigate the reasons for this lack of reproducibility with the aim of providing an optimized protocol.

Han's paper has become a focal point in the academia and media following its publication. It was the most widely covered paper in China last year, according to media monitor Meltwater, with nearly 4,000 Chinese news stories citing the paper in just the first two months after its publication.

But the technique proposed in the paper soon attracted controversy. Initial complaints on social media that the research could not be replicated were followed by a series of peer-reviewed publications demonstrating the same. Some researchers used human cells as Han did, while others tried zebrafish or mouse cells.

Apple rally pushes Dow to record high

Apple Inc’s surprisingly strong quarterly results and forecast pushed the iPhone maker’s shares to a record high, helping the Dow Jones Industrial Average breach the 22,000 mark for the first time ever.

The stock rose as much as 6.4 percent to US$159.65 in early trading, boosting the market capitalization of the world’s most valuable company by about US$50 billion to US$832 billion.

“The Appleverse is expanding with all segments growing,” UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said.

At least eight brokerages raised their price targets on the stock, with Barclays making the most bullish move by raising its price target by US$23-$146. The median price target on the stock is US$165.

“There is no reason for opportunistic investors to trek to the sidelines given the June-quarter print and Sept-quarter guide,” Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz wrote in a client note.

Apple on Tuesday reported better-than-expected third-quarter results and indicated that its upcoming 10th-anniversary iPhone lineup was on schedule. Apple is widely tipped to adopt higher-resolution OLED displays for the latest iPhone, along with better touchscreen technology and wireless charging — which could come with a US$1,000 plus price tag.

24th Mar 2017, Based on the new “Foreigner's Work Permit” (FWP) policy. Now it takes about 15 working days to renew the work permit, plus 7 working days for the residence permit renewal. It's total 22 working days (before it's only 12 working days). If your employer didn't register in the new system, it will take extra 5 working days for online account registration. So VisaInChina suggest all my clients start your work visa renewal application with us at least 45-60 days before your visa expiring.
